UMS Systems
Posted by: MarinerGalaxyIn the ships with Unmanned machinery Space certification, the main Engine and the ancillary machinery are all automated and a fool proof control system monitors all the parameters and if there is a variation in a measured value comparing to the desired value, then the actuator is activated to take the corrective action. In case of a rise in Jacket cooling water temperature, the sea water valve is opened more and the Jacket cooling water Temperature is brought to the desired value. Whereas if a Jacket Cooling water pump fails for some reason, then the standby pump is automatically started and alarm is given to the duty engineer to rectify the failed jacket cooling water pump.
Since most parameters are monitored and the remedial action is taken by the control system, the watching keeping function is to monitor the other parameters including the vibration Current taken by the motors, Filters, change over options etc.
It is important to check all the sensors for the correct functionality and make sure that there is no oscillations due to the differences in the measured and desired values.
Safe and efficient operation in the UMS mode
When the machinery space is unattended, a duty engineer is responsible for supervision. The tour of inspection is similar to that of a conventional watch. You should be ready to attend alarms relayed to your cabin or to various public spaces like smoke room and saloon.

Bridge Control
The Bridge control system in ship consists of various electrical and electronics devices like Radar, ECDIS, GYRO, GPS echo sounder and the AIS. These equipments helps the operator to select the desired density of chart information, chart corrections. GPS permits operator to establish the position, speed and time at sea or in air, at any time and in any weather condition. The echo sounder is a device that detects objects on the water by means of sonar that is by using reflected sound waves.
Testing regime of UMS:
Periodically unattended machinery spaces:
Inspection and testing are performed for periodically unattended machinery spaces according to the requirements of SOLAS regulation II-1/48. This inspection and testing procedures include:
The high level of seepage in the bilge wells should produce an alarm. In case of start/stop of the bilge pump automatically, alarms denotes:
- The inflow of water is greater than the capacity of the pump. The solution is that the bilge wells develop a high alarm level or the pump must be operated for a longer period of time.
- The pump must be operated very often. Generally, long run alarm must be used.
The control of the inlet and the discharge valves must be situated below the water line or a bilge piping system. In case of water rise, these spaces can be easily accessed by using this arrangement. If the control can become unreachable due to flooding, the control must be located above the flood water level.
These requirements vary according to the Administrations. The control of valve can be located above the bulkhead deck in some type of ships, whereas, the others require the control to be above the engine- room floor plate. The function of this equipment should be checked for its proper operation.
